Description
This postage stamp was issued by Ireland on December 10, 1981, to mark the Centenary of the Land Law Act of 1881. The Land Law Act was a landmark piece of legislation that aimed to address the longstanding grievances of tenant farmers in Ireland. Prior to the Act, landlords had considerable power over their tenants, including the ability to evict them without cause and to charge exorbitant rents. This system of landownership had led to widespread poverty and resentment among tenant farmers, who were largely excluded from the political process.
