Description
The US Postal Service first issued these five 32-cent American Indian Dances commemorative stamps on June 7, 1996, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The stamps went on sale nationwide on June 8.
Designed by Keith Birdsong of Muskogee, Oklahoma, the stamps feature five designs of American Indian dances performed in beautiful and elaborately detailed modern dance attire. There are five dances represented on the stamps. Three of these are the Hoop, Fancy, and Traditional dances, which are performed at powwows and considered Pan Indian. The Raven dance is performed by a number of Northwest Coast tribes while the Butterfly dance is performed by southwest Pueblo groups.
