Description

These 18-cent US postage stamps were first placed on sale on March 25, 1975, in Greensboro, North Carolina. They honor Peter Francisco, a Portuguese-born American patriot and soldier in the American Revolutionary War sometimes known as the "Giant of the Revolution". Francisco was presumably born in the Azores. but was found at about age five on the docks at City Point, Virginia, in 1765, and was taken to the Prince George County Poorhouse after apparently having been kidnapped. He grew to be a man of massive size and prodigious strength, reaching six feet and eight inches in height and weighing 260 pounds. At the age of 16 Francisco joined the 10th Virginia Regiment, and fought with distinction at numerous engagements during the American Revolutionary War.
