Description
These two Portuguese stamps were issued on May 14, 1953, to commemorate the fifth centenary of the birth of Saint Joan, Princess of Aviz (1452-1490), also known as Joanna, Princess of Portugal. Joan, of royal blood, joined the Dominican Convent of Jesus in Aveiro in 1475. She was beatified in 1693 by Pope Innocent XII. Although never officially canonized, in Portugal she is known as the Princess Saint Joan.
