Description
This set of five Greek postage stamps was issued to commemorate various sports events. Depictions on the stamps include the Olympic Day Emblem, the cup awarded to Spyros Louis in 1896 (Spyros Louis was the gold medal winner of the first Olympic Marathon race in 1896), a Hurdles race (to commemorate the qualifying rounds of the European Championship), the ”Discus-thrower” by Cons. Demetriades (to commemorate the 9th European Athletics Championship held in Athens), and the Goddess Hera Temple, Olympia (to commemorate the 7th Meeting of the International Olympic Academy in Olympia).
