Description
This sheet of twenty 37-cent US postage stamps was issued to honor Marian Anderson as part of the USPS Black Heritage Series on January 27, 2005. Marian Anderson, a beacon of brilliance and a symbol of resilience, was an American contralto who captivated audiences with her rich, powerful voice and unwavering spirit. Born in Philadelphia in 1897, Anderson’s musical talent emerged early, and by the age of six, she was singing solos at the Union Baptist Church. Despite facing racial discrimination that limited her opportunities, Anderson persevered, her determination fueled by her passion for music and her belief in her own abilities.
First city of issue: Washington, DC, at Constitution Hall where Anderson was prohibited from performing in 1939 because of her race.
