Description
This collectible block of twelve 12-cent Canal Zone postage stamps was issued to honor engineer Lt. Col. David du Bose Gaillard. Gaillard worked for years fighting the difficult terrain and constant earth slides involved with the construction of the Panama Canal. He finally collapsed on July 26, 1913, and was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, where he died on December 5.
