Description
This block of four 1-cent postage stamps was issued by the Canal Zone to honor William Crawford Gorgas (1854-1920), an Army physician and 22nd Surgeon General of the U.S. Army. Gorgas is known for his work in Havana and at the Panama Canal in slowing the transmission of yellow fever and malaria by controlling the mosquitoes that carry these diseases.
